Karena Armstrong is the current owner and chef at the Salopian Inn McLaren Vale. She took over the historic sight 3 years ago and has quietly and proudly brought it back to its former glory. Here, she serves eclectic food inspired by regional produce and produce grown in the restaurants own kitchen garden. An original South Australian, Karena is committed to small producers and has worked closely to build relationships with many of the states finest producers.
The Salopian Inn, is recognised for its commitment to great regional food and wine, awarded 3 forks from the Advertiser Good Food Guide, a star from the Gourmet Traveller Food Guide, along with the praise of Australia’s most highly regarded food critic, John Lethlean who described her food style as “….Asian Inspired Alice Waters” and “more restaurants should be like this.”
Karena has been fortunate enough to include amongst her mentors many of Australia’s top female chefs including Kylie Kwong, Alla Wolf-Tasker and Karen Martini.
Her training and travels around the world are reflected in her food style and passion, which is best described as eclectic.
Karena is modest enough to tell you that she has been lucky, however her passion, hard work and discipline has given her the growth opportunity to now make her one of the states highly regarded cooking talents.
